In Memorium - Kim Beazley Senior
The Board of Trustees expresses deep sadness at the passing of our Patron Kim Beazley Senior in October 2007.
Mr Beazley was a brilliant man; a scholar, orator and one of the Whitlam government's most effective ministers.
He made a massive contribution to Australia and was universally respected and admired across the nation.
As the West Australian newspaper described it, Mr Beazley had a classic Labour poverty-to-power upbringing in working class South Fremantle. He became the youngest member of the House of Representatives at the age of 28, remaining member for Fremantle from 1945 to 1977. As Federal Education Minister he introduced reforms that transformed the nation's education system. He also championed Aboriginal land rights and created the idea of a nuclear-free South Pacific.
For more than a decade Mr Beazley, along with his wife Betty, contributed significant support to the Fremantle Hospital Medical Research Foundation in his role as Patron. He played a unique and vitally important role in our success and has left a tremendous legacy for the people of Fremantle.
Mr Beazley died surrounded by his family at Bethesda Hospital in Claremont and was given a state funeral, with the family requesting that donations be made to the FHMRF in lieu of flowers.
Mr Beazley's guiding principle was The thoughts of God, given primacy in the life of a man, bring to the innermost motives the virtue of mercy, and with it the cure for hatred that can turn the tide of history. This is the essence of intelligent statesmanship.
Farewell to a true statesman. He will forever remain in our hearts.
A Special Tribute to Lois Ruth Maxwell-Marriott - "Miss Moneypenny"
Passed away on 30th September 2007 at Fremantle Hospital at age 80 from a combination of lung and vascular disease.
She was much loved by her family and is survived by her son Christian and daughter Melinda and their families. Lois also had two brothers and family in Canada and the USA. All will miss her sense of humour and powerful personality.
For many people Lois Maxwell is immortalised as the original Ms Moneypenny, a lovelorn secretary who flirted shamelessly with Sean Connery, Roger Moore and George Lazenby in the first 14 James Bond movies.
Far from being immortal Lois faced the realities of illness that become more common with age. Whilst visiting family in Western Australia, Lois was rushed to Fremantle Hospital with a thrombosis of the major artery in her elbow. The skilled surgeons at Fremantle Hospital were fortunately able to save her arm. Not long afterwards, another thrombosis was discovered in her knee which meant another spell in hospital.
Following the excellent care that she had received, Lois Maxwell became a fabulous ambassador for the Fremantle Hospital Medical Research Foundation. She donated her speaking and publicity fees, assisted with launches and promotional events and hosted a charity morning tea in the Foundation's honour.
Her final request was for people to make donations to the Fremantle Hospital Medical Research Foundation.
We are forever indebted that a star as bright as Lois chose to shine her light on the work of the Foundation and will miss her enormously.
